The Youth Advocate Program allows for a flexible schedule and is great for a second job on the weekends. At YAP, you are expected to mentor and be an advocate for young adults in foster care and in the juvenile detention system. This offers the satisfaction of helping youths who need it the most and influence them onto a better path. Your immediate supervisor serves as a guide for the experience and offers advice and counseling as well as guidance and directives.
Co-workers formally assemble once a month during staff meetings where they discuss issues and concerns of their youths and of the program. The most difficult part of the job is establishing positive relationships with not just the youths, but also the parents who may have their own understanding of your position. Although this can also be the most enjoyable aspect if the youth and parents are engaged and compliant with the program.
