Project Deluge publicly launched in March of as an archival project dedicated to documenting and uploading never-before-released game ROMs from the massive catalogue of one extremely dedicated collector. This includes prototypes, early press copies, mid-localization builds, and perhaps most exciting, entire unreleased games. Each of them is dumped by the apparently very nice owner, checked for differences from the final build, and then finally playtested by a devoted team of archivists.
The unique features of each build are then catalogued and a disc image is uploaded to the archive. Some Saturn, PlayStation, and CD-i protos followed in April, and just a few days ago, on September 18, the team completed the gargantuan task of documenting almost Dreamcast and Xbox prototypes , which are now available for everyone to check out. Perhaps the greatest gem here is an unreleased English localization of Dinosaur Hunting: Ushinawareta Daichi, which despite seeming all-but-complete, never made it outside of Japan.
Next up is another near-complete game, starring that Saturday morning cartoon idol, He-Man. Another interesting find is a near-complete build of Pac-Man World Rally. It made it to PS2 and Gamecube, but this Xbox build never went past the prototyping stage.
That so many of these games were close to completion but never made it to their intended home on the Xbox speaks volumes about the console wars of the time. While not as overwhelming in force as the CATs, aliens have the distinct advantage of being able to retreat from battle only to return more powerful than before. In some cases, these changes will be minor and other cases will be major replacing the lower torso with wheels.
